200th anniversary of the Portland cement patent

21 October 2024, Published under Cement News

200 years ago today, on 21 October 1824, the patent for Portland cement was granted to Joseph Aspdin (1778-1855), a bricklayer and inventor from Leeds, UK. The product was called Portland cement because of the resemblance of the hardened concrete to Portland stone, a limestone quarried on the Isle of Portland in Dorset, UK. Portland cement, patented by Joseph Aspdin on 21 October 1824 Mr Aspdin, along with contemporaries including Louis Vicat (hydraulic limes), Isaac Johnson (s...

Aluminium and iron in clinker

06 February 2019, Published under Cement News

Aluminium and iron are two of the key components in Portland cement clinker. Varying their presence in clinker can have significant effects on the final clinker. Arthur Harrisson looks at some of the impacts of such variations. Figure 1: light grey aluminate and white ferrite very slowly cooled. The hexagonal blue alite crystal below centre is 30µm across The four essential constituents of Portland cement clinker are usually listed as: • calcium oxide (CaO or, in cement chemi...

C2S solid solution reactivity in high-belite cement

28 November 2017, Published under Cement News

The key cause of the high energy intensity in the cement production process is the high heat required to form alite, the main constituent of Portland cement. One option is to lower the alite content, which leads to a higher share of belite. However, such high-belite cement often has a lower early strength, impacting on the quality of the final product. To address this issue, achieving a suitable control of belite reactivity is essential. By Dr Eng Daisuke Kurokawa and Shun Niijima, Taiheiyo...
